Throughout its 50-year history, the mission of the College of Public Health and Health Professions has always focused on improving health through research, education and service. Below are some examples of the college's community outreach activities.

National Rural Behavioral Health Center

Since the mid-1990s, faculty in the National Rural Behavioral Health Center have been assisting with community response to the mental health effects of natural and human-made disasters including Hurricane Andrew, the Red River floods in the Midwest, drought and wildfires, the September 11th terrorist attacks, and Hurricane Katrina.

Florida Office on Disability and Health

The Florida Office on Disability and Health is the state's first centralized program to coordinate Florida's disability programs and services. The office's mission is to design, implement, monitor and evaluate state and community programs and services for people with disabilities.

Geriatric Gait and Balance Clinic

Faculty members in the department of physical therapy address the needs of seniors who have suffered from recurrent falls at the Geriatric Gait and Balance Clinic at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The multidisciplinary clinic helps seniors reduce falls and improve balance control.

Smart House

The UF Smart House at Oak Hammock Retirement Community is open for monthly tours which showcase the universally designed smart house and the latest technology to assist people in maintaining independent living in their homes. The UF Smart House serves both as a community resource for information on assistive technologies and universal design, and as a living laboratory for research and development of new assistive technologies.

Alzonline

Alzonline.net, a one-of-a-kind service, provides caregivers of people with Alzheimer's and other memory problems with helpful information on caring for their loved ones.

ACORN Clinic

Since 2000, physical therapy faculty members have provided more than 400 hours of physical therapy consultation services for clients of the Alachua County Organization for Rural Needs Inc. (ACORN) Clinic, a program that provides low-cost medical and dental care to residents of north central Florida. Faculty members in the department of health services research, management and policy regularly serve on the ACORN Clinic's board of directors.

Memory Screenings

Members of the department of clinical and health psychology offer free memory screenings at The Villages, a retirement community in Leesburg.

Hearing Screenings

Audiologists in the department of communicative disorders regularly offer free hearing screenings at health fairs, local schools and in the department's clinics.
